Sanshou which was originally developed by the Chinese military is based upon the study and practices of traditional Kung Fu and modern combat fighting techniques. It is a full contact system of fighting, which includes close range punches and kicks, with wrestling, takedowns, throws, sweeps and kick catches.

Modern Sanshou developed into a sport and protective equipment was introduced. Gloves, head-guards and body protection is now worn in competition bouts. A set of rules was also introduced to reduce the risk of serious injury.
